The Iona Gaels have made it to the NCAA Tournament. Here’s a preview of the team and a prediction of how they’ll do during March Madness.

    Resume

    Team: Iona Gaels

    Record:
    22-10

    Conference:
    MAAC

    Head coach:
    Tim Cluess

    How they got here:
    Won conference tournament

    The Good

Iona beat Monmouth to earn their trip to the NCAA Tournament, and they did it by turning up the offense and limiting their turnovers. Plainly, this is what the team has found success with all season long. A.J. English is the star of the show, averaging 22.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.2 assists, and he’s the catalyst for everything. Jordan Washington, Deyshonee Much and Isaiah Williams provide support, and Aaron Roundtree is a defensive stopper.

    The Bad

Little size and a lack of athleticism are problems for the Gaels, who also have a bad habit of tuning out mentally on the defensive end. Too many easy baskets can turn games into shootouts — Iona has lost games in which it scored 102 and 91 points this year – and against superior athletic teams that’s a huge problem.

    Prediction

Iona is going to give its opponent a headache, and even if the Gaels don’t win, it should be an entertaining game. Matchups will be key for Iona, which likely will be an early exit barring a shootout that sees the team get hot and run a team out of the gym.
