Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver says there is one major difference between spring practice under Tom Herman and Major Applewhite: less yelling, more coaching.

When a head coach leaves a program for a perceived better job, sometimes players understand that it is just the nature of the business, and sometimes they might feel a bit slighted. Listening to the words of Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver, he still might not have forgiven Tom Herman for leaving the Cougars for Texas.

Asked if there was a difference between this year’s spring practice, under Major Applewhite, and last year’s under Herman, Oliver offered a blunt assessment.

“I just feel like a lot less yelling and a lot more coaching.”

This fits the narrative of the early days of spring practice, as Herman was quick to play bad cop to the Longhorn players.

“We were not going to end that stretch period until every single person on the football team did it perfectly right,” Herman said earlier this week. “And coach, ‘what does that have to do with football?’ It has everything to do with football. Everything is about taking care of the details. Doing the little things, putting in the effort, finishing a drill.”

Herman’s strategy seemed to work with the Cougars. In his two years in charge, Houston went 22-4, including 13-1 in 2015 and defeating Florida State in the Peach Bowl. Whether that same coaching style reaches the Longhorn players remains to be seen.

As for Oliver, who earned First Team All-American honors as a freshman last season, if he is getting coached up more, that is bad news for the rest of college football.
