Houston AD Hunter Yurachek issues a comment on Tom Herman and whether or not the Cougars’ head coach has, in fact, made contact with the LSU Tigers regarding their opening.

The coaching carousel and rumor mill started churning at full speed on Thanksgiving night with news that Tom Herman was close to a deal with the LSU Tigers to become their next head football coach.

If the news is true, Houston athletic director Hunter Yurachek is not privy, or so he says. On Thursday evening, Yurachek released a statement that he has heard neither from Herman nor the coach’s representatives regarding LSU.

“I have not been informed by Tom or his agent that they are in conversations with LSU. We are in Memphis, preparing for a game.”

Houston Cougars beat writer Joseph Duarte has reported that of all the schools involved in the Tom Herman sweepstakes (LSU, Texas, et al.), only Baylor has formally asked permission to speak with the coach. Duarte has also reported that Yurachek met with Herman earlier in the week to discuss a hefty pay increase to the tune of seven figures.

LSU fired Les Miles earlier this season, and had been using the remainder of the season as a working interview for interim head coach Ed Orgeron. Alleva also had eyes for FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher, whom he had flirted with offering last offseason while also deciding on Miles’ future. On Thanksgiving, Fisher reportedly rebuffed LSU’s offers, choosing to stay in Tallahassee – a move that falls in line with Fisher’s repeated comments that he is more than happy in his current position.

At this time, really anything is possible. Herman and his camp may have spoken to LSU. They may not have, merely floating a rumor to push Texas’ hand in making a Godfather offer, leveraging the fact that LSU intends to have a coach in place by weekend’s end. The only things for certain at this point are that Houston faces Memphis on Friday in hopes of locking up consecutive double-digit win seasons, and Herman’s name will be the center of the college football universe for, at least, the next 72 hours.
