Gonzaga has been getting it done on both ends of the floor so far this season, and it’s translated to a 4-1 record with the lone defeat coming on a neutral floor to Texas A&M. But head coach Mark Few’s squad bounced back with a 73-70 win against UConn on Friday.
The Bulldogs are averaging 81.2 points and giving up just 60.8 points per game, but this will be their first game of the year as the visiting team. They went 10-1 on the road last season.
For Washington State, it’s coming off a 77-65 win against Texas Southern and is sitting with an unblemished record at 4-0. While scoring 79.5 points per game, the Cougars are also giving up just 64.8 points per game. Although, they haven’t faced a team of Gonzaga’s caliber yet.
Washington State went 8-6 at home last season, so let’s see if the Bulldogs can get their first road win of the season.
Kyle Wiltjer is licking his lips right now, just staring at a Cougars defense allowing opponents to shoot 39.1 percent from the field. Wiltjer (18.8 Pts, 7.6 Reb, 1.8 Ast) will need to have a big game for the Bulldogs to take this one away from home. But Washington State is hitting 50.4 percent of its shots, so Gonzaga will have to lock down and contest every shot.
The Cougars need Josh Hawkinson (18.0 Pts, 9.7 Reb, 2.3 Ast) to come up big in this one. Hawkinson is the only true double-double threat on the team. If he bangs on the boards and gets some put-back points, they’ll be in decent shape. But Ike Iroegbu needs to continue the barrage of three pointers he’s been raining down. He’s shooting 58.3 percent from deep and can have a huge impact by spacing the floor.
Gonzaga is going to walk in and walk out with a win. The Cougars just do not play well enough at home to have any kind of significant edge. Sure, home-court advantage helps, but the Bulldogs had a lot of success on the road last season and have 10 players returning from that team. Iroegbu will be deadly from behind the arc, but it won’t be enough. The Bulldogs will control the boards and win the game.
