Giancarlo Stanton has done it again – he hit his 50th home run of the season in the Miami Marlins’ 6-2 win over the Padres on Sunday.
Stanton is the first National League player to reach 50 home runs since Prince Fielder in 2007. It’s the earliest a player has reached that number since Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa in 2001.
“It’s almost getting normal because he’s played so great right now,” Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon said about Stanton following the game. “He’s leading us. It’s amazing to see.”
The homer was his 17th in August, which tied him for the second-most in MLB history in the month behind Rudy York, who had 18 in 1937. He has 13 more home runs than anyone else this season; the only players to finish a season like that were Babe Ruth, who did it seven times, Jimmie Foxx, who did it twice, and Willie Mays.
With the help of Stanton’s home run prowess, the Marlins completed a three-game sweep of the Padres and have now won 13 of their past 16 games. It was the first time they’ve swept the Padres since 2012.
The Marlins will play the Washington Nationals on Monday at Nationals Park.
