Georgia vs. Penn State TaxSlayer Bowl recap, score, and key stats for the Bulldogs and Nittany Lions.
January 2, 2016
Prediction:Penn State 20, Georgia 17, Line: Georgia -7, o/u: 41.5
And You Care Because … Georgia got up 24-3 and appeared to be cruising right along helped by a Malcolm Mitchell 44-yard touchdown catch on a trick play from Terry Godwin, and a Godwin 17-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter. Sony Michel ran for a 12-yard score late in the third, but Penn State came roaring back with Trace McSorley – in for Christian Hackenberg, who suffered an injured shoulder – hitting Geno Lewis and DaeSean Hamilton with fourth quarter touchdown passes to pull the Nittany Lions within seven. Penn State had one last shot getting down to the Georgia 39, but the last gasp final throw was knocked away.
What Else?
– Georgia RB Sony Michel ran 20 times for 85 yards and a score.
– Penn State QB Trace McSorley completed 14-of-27 passes for 142 yards and two scores, and ran seven times for 31 yards. Christian Hackenberg completed 8-of-14 passes for 139 yards with a pick – after the game, he declared himself eligible for the NFL Draft.
– Penn State WR Chris Godwin caught six passes for 133 yards.
– Georgia WR Malcolm Mitchell caught five passes for 114 yards and a score.
– Total Yards: Penn State 401 – Georgia 327
– Fourth Down Conversions: Penn State 4-of-6 – Georgia 0-of-1
Game Rating: B. It was an even, interesting game after the Penn State offense got desperate. Georgia looked great over the first three quarters, but Penn State started balling when Trace McSorley tried to bring the team back. Christian Hackenberg’s shoulder injury allowed the coaching staff to see McSorley in action. Considering head coach Kirby Smart was in the stands, and the team had to go through the transition, this was a great win for Georgia.
