Oregon State head coach discussed Boise State quarterback Brett Rypien ahead of the Beavers' matchup with the Broncos on Saturday. Rypien is in his sophomore year and his second season as Boise State's starting quarterback.
September 21, 2016Oregon State head coach Gary Andersen discussed facing Boise State quarterback Brett Rypien when the Beavers take on the Broncos Saturday.
Oregon State is preparing for its second consecutive home game and looking forward to a shot to improve to 2-1 on the season. All that stands in the way is 2-0 Boise State.
The Beavers are ranked No. 31 in passing defense this season, allowing 178.5 passing yards per game. But they haven’t yet faced a quarterback like the one Bryan Harsin’s Broncos have under center.
Boise State’s offense is orchestrated by sophomore quarterback Brett Rypien, who, according to co-offensive coordinator Scott Huff, has really matured since his freshman season.
It’s tough to improve from a freshman year that yielded 3,350 passing yards, 20 passing touchdowns and 63.6 percent of Rypien’s passes completed, but Oregon State head coach Gary Andersen is preparing for such. Even though Rypien is a true sophomore, Andersen doesn’t see him as being young anymore considering the experience he’s gained.
The Beavers coach made that known during the weekly Pac-12 teleconference.
“I wouldn’t even consider him a young quarterback anymore. Yes, he’s a sophomore, but he’s played a whole bunch of football games, had an offseason to obviously prepare and get himself in a good spot … So, he’s not young,” Andersen said.
So far, through two games, Rypien has completed 60.3 percent of his passes for 646 yards and three touchdowns with three interceptions.
Andersen acknowledged Rypien’s intangibles and sees him as a perfect fit for what Boise State wants to do on offense.
“He knows how to run the field. He does exactly what they ask him to do. I think he understands the game very well and the situations that he’s in, as far as keeping his team in a spot to be successful.”
Andersen has a valid point. The Broncos are ranked No. 24 in total offense with 502 yards per game and No. 8 in passing offense with 362.5 yards per game.
Those rankings are the byproduct of Rypien’s comfort in his new leadership role and his relationship with wide receivers Chaz Anderson, Thomas Sperbeck and Cedric Wilson.
“There’s a lot to their offense. There’s a lot of moving pieces. There’s a lot of personnel groupings, and it takes a smart quarterback to be able to handle that,” Andersen said. “So, he’s a talented young man … He has some very, very nice weapons around him.”
Kickoff between Boise State and Oregon State is set for 3:30 ET on Saturday.
