    Why You Need To Care

Florida State is swimming in unfamiliar waters, out of title contention for the first time since 2011. How will a program so accustomed to playoff-like football in November react to its new reality?

The Seminoles lost to Clemson last week, 23-13, in the ACC game of the year, ending hopes for a fourth-straight Atlantic Division crown. FSU has been relegated to playing for a 10-win season and improved bowl positioning. NC State is hoping to exploit the Noles when they’re down, earning a win over the league’s most prominent program. The Pack is 6-3, but has feasted on weaker teams, while losing to Louisville, Virginia Tech and Clemson. State really needs a statement win, which hasn’t happened since the FSU upset three years ago.

    Why NC State Will Win

The Pack is catching the Noles at an opportune time. Not only is Florida State emotionally drained from Saturday’s loss, but it’s also out of the title hunt. State had better success against the Clemson D than the Noles did, producing 41 points two weeks ago. And the Clemson game not withstanding, its defense has been sound, allowing an average of 15 points in the other eight games. An iffy FSU O-line must pay particular attention to Pack DE Mike Rose, who has 9.5 sacks.

    Why Florida State Will Win

The Wolfpack defense has been steady, but it’s not quite as fast or as talented as the Seminoles. Spearheaded by DE DeMarcus Walker, LB Reggie Northrup and SS Derwin James, Florida State hasn’t given up more than 24 points in a game this season. And it’ll clamp down on a State offense that’s really going to miss the presence of injured RB Matt Dayes. The Noles, conversely, will boast two of this game’s top playmakers, RB Dalvin Cook and WR Travis Rudolph.

    Player Who Matters

Who’ll be handing the ball to Cook and pitching it to Rudolph? Junior Sean Maguire started last week in place of Everett Golson, who was returning from a concussion. But Jimbo Fisher has yet to commit to a starter for this week. He has choices, though Maguire does a better job of stretching the field and, unlike Golson, will be back in Tallahassee in 2016.

    What’s Going To Happen?

Florida State is no doubt vulnerable, pending how it approaches this game. But who has NC State defeated? The Wolfpack will compete for a half behind QB Jacoby Brissett and a scrappy defense. And then the Seminoles will take off after the break, riding Cook and its defensive speed to a 20th straight home win.
