Florida State enters spring practice with star safety Derwin James 100 percent and ready to bounce back from his injured 2016 season.
But while head coach Jimbo Fisher said that James is a full-go for spring drills, the Seminoles’ secondary will be missing another one of its key players.
At his press conference to kick off the spring season on Monday, Fisher announced that cornerback Tarvarus McFadden will miss the entirety of spring practice following January surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.
The junior tied for the FBS lead in interceptions last season with eight.
“He played with it all year. It wasn’t bad,” Fisher said. “It was torn, and we wanted to go ahead and fix it. [Our trainer] said it’ll be a problem, so get it [taken care of] now during the offseason.”
The 6-foot-2, 198-pound McFadden started all 13 games as a sophomore, made the first-team all-ACC list and was a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Award in ’16. With the graduation of Marquez White, the Seminoles will be without both starting corners from last year during spring ball.
Star safety James, however, will be a full participant after missing the final 11 games with a torn meniscus.
In addition, Fisher announced that starting offensive linemen Alec Eberle (hip surgery) and Landon Dickerson (torn ACL) will miss the spring. He also said that guard Wilson Bell will graduate this semester and transfer. Bell started five games last season and every game in 2015.
Offensive line was an area of concern last year for the ‘Noles, as quarterback Deondre Francois was often battered. It’s a unit that must be much improved if the ‘Noles have any chance at competing for a berth in the College Football Playoff in 2017.
