March 14, 2016The Fresno State Bulldogs have made it to the NCAA Tournament. Here’s a preview of the team and a prediction of how they’ll do during March Madness.
Team: Fresno State Bulldogs
Record: 25-9
Conference: Mountain West
Head coach: Rodney Terry
How they got here: Won conference tournament
The beauty of Fresno State is that it has a senior guard in Marvelle Harris who can light up the scoreboard, is a demon on defense and turns live-ball turnovers into opportunities for him or his teammates on the other end. Then the Bulldogs have a pair of quality forwards in Torren Jones and Karachi Edo who combine to average 20.5 points and 14.5 rebounds a game, and both of them shoot better than 50 percent from the field. Three other players average at least 8.0 points, meaning this is a balanced team.
The Bulldogs tend to play up or down to the level of their opponent, which doesn’t say much about this team’s mental maturity. Fresno State can play different styles, but it often allows its opponent to be the one who dictates the pace. The Bulldogs are talented, but they allow themselves to get pushed around some.
This isn’t a team that will make a Sweet 16 run, but it can make Utah sweat in the first round because it has all the pieces it needs to shock a team that overlooks them. If the Bulldogs are focused on both ends and get hot from beyond the perimeter, this could be a first-round sleeper.
