Fresno State and Jeff Tedford are reportedly close on a deal to make him the Bulldogs’ next head coach.

There were plenty of candidates for Fresno State’s head coaching job when the Bulldogs fired Tim DeRuyter late last month, and it now seems as though they’re close to hiring a replacement.

Former Cal head coach Jeff Tedford, who’s currently an offensive consultant for Chris Petersen’s Washington Huskies, is close to an agreement to become Fresno State’s next head coach, according to FootballScoop.

Tedford graduated from Fresno State in 1983 where he played quarterback. He then spent time on Fresno State’s staff after his career in the Canadian Football League ended, serving as its quarterbacks coach in 1992 and offensive coordinator from 1993 to 1997. Tedford left to take the offensive coordinator job and to coach the quarterbacks at Oregon from 1998-2001, from there moving to become the head coach at Cal.

While in Berkeley, he led the Golden Bears to an 82-57 overall record, including a 5-3 bowl record in 11 seasons from 2002 to 2012. When he left Berkeley, Tedford moved on to Tampa Bay to serve as the Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator. In December of 2014, he took the head coaching job with the BC Lions in the Canadian Football League and then wound up with the Huskies on Petersen’s staff this season in Seattle.

Some of the quarterbacks Tedford has worked with include Trent Dilfer, David Carr, Akili Smith, Joey Harrington, Kyle Boller and Aaron Rodgers. Tedford also coached running backs Shane Vereen, Jahvid Best, Justin Forsett and Marshawn Lynch — Beast Mode and Rodgers being the most notable.

Fresno State currently sits at 1-9, and last in the West Division of the Mountain West. The Bulldogs are the only MW team without a conference win. They’re only two seasons removed from playing in the conference championship game, and three seasons removed from winning the Mountain West.

UPDATE: Fresno State has hired Jeff Tedford as its next head coach, and a press conference will take place Friday to announce the hiring, according to the Fresno Bee.
