Fresno State fired head coach Tim DeRuyter on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs made the change after they lost to Utah State Saturday night to fall to 1-7 on the year.

Enough is enough.

Fresno State fired head coach Tim DeRuyter on Sunday afternoon midway through his fifth season following a 38-20 loss to Utah State on Saturday.

Offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau has been named the interim head coach.

The Bulldogs have lost their last six games to drop to 1-7 and haven’t won since beating FCS foe Sacramento State, 31-3, in Week 2.

DeRuyter finishes his tenure with Fresno State with a 30-30 record, including an 0-3 mark in bowl games.

DeRuyter took over the Bulldogs in 2012 when they joined the Mountain West Conference after spending the previous two seasons as Texas A&M’s defensive coordinator. He led the team to a 9-4 record in that first season, then had another fantastic season the following year.

With Derek Carr and and Davante Adams leading the way, Fresno State finished 11-2. That was the Bulldogs’ first season with double-digit wins since 2001, and it was ranked as high as No. 15 in the AP Top 25. That was the first time the Bulldogs had cracked the AP rankings since 2008.

Fresno State rewarded DeRuyter with a contract extension worth approximately $1.5 million annually over five years following those back-to-back Mountain West titles.

But it’s been all downhill since Carr and Adams took off for the NFL. After a 20-6 start in his first two seasons, DeRuyter finished 10-24 with Fresno State.

So far in the 2016 campaign, the Bulldogs rank No. 111 in total offense (350.4 yards/game), No. 121 in scoring offense (20.5 points/game), No. 91 in total defense (433.1 yards/game) and No. 109 in scoring defense (34.1 points/game).

Fresno State sits at No. 95 in the 2017 recruiting class rankings with 11 commits, three of which are 3-star prospects.
