Four-star safety Nick Cross, the top unsigned safety in the 2019 recruiting class, inked his letter of intent Tuesday, officially joining Maryland after flipping his commitment from Florida State.
Cross is the No. 4 safety prospect and No. 55 overall recruit in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
The Hyattsville, Maryland native verbally committed to Florida State in early September, but elected not to sign his letter of intent on the early National Signing Day in December or on the spring National Signing Day in February.
He received interest from Georgia, Maryland and Penn State after his initial commitment, according to 247Sports.
The 6-foot, 206-pound safety took an official visit to Penn State on Feb. 1, following official visits to Auburn, Alabama and Florida State last June.
Cross has been timed running a 4.43-second 40-yard dash and 4.28-second shuttle run. He has a 38.5-inch vertical leap.
247Sports National Recruiting Analyst Brian Dohn compares Cross to Adrian Amos of the Chicago Bears and projects Cross to be a future second- or third-round NFL Draft pick.
“He is already cut, but can fill out and be a 220-pound safety,” Dohn wrote.
He’s the highest-ranked player in Maryland’s 2019 recruiting class, which is ranked No. 46 nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
