Florida vs. LSU Game Preview

Florida has a chance to clinch the SEC East and get a shot against Alabama in the SEC Championship Game with a win. The Gators are coming off a 20-7 victory over South Carolina, but will be without some key players. One of whom is quarterback Luke Del Rio for the second consecutive week, meaning Austin Appleby will get another start under center – his fourth of the year.

LSU ran over Arkansas in a 38-10 win this past weekend. Running back Derrius Guice rushed for 252 yards and two touchdowns while Leonard Fournette added 98 yards and three touchdowns himself.

What To Know About Florida

The Gators offense begins and ends with the running game, especially Jordan Scarlett who rushed for 134 yards in the win against South Carolina. The passing game has been lackluster this season, although Appleby did throw for two touchdowns this past Saturday. Getting Scarlett and the ground game going will be key against the tough LSU defense.

Defensively, Florida will try to stop the run and put the pressure on LSU quarterback Danny Etling to beat them with his arm. That is when Jalen Tabor and Quincy Wilson make their mark, creating turnovers with interceptions.

What to Know About LSU

Much like the Florida offense, the Tigers rely on the rushing game to move the ball and put points on the board. When they become one-dimensional and are forced to pass, they struggle. The combination of Guice and Fournette will have to be able to shed some tackles and get into the second level of the Gators defense.

Same goes for LSU’s defense: stop the run and put the pressure on Appleby to throw the ball.

Advantages

Offense: LSU. Guice and Fournette make up one of the most talented backfields in the nation.

Defense: Tie. Both units are terrific at making other offenses look bad.

Special Teams: Tie. This game could very well come down to field position and field goals.

Coaching: Tie. Ed Orgeron wants the full-time job. I am doubtful he gets it.

Intangibles: Florida. Win, and the East division belongs to the Gators.

This game was supposed to be played on October 8 in Gainesville, but Hurricane Matthew forced its postponement. Now, the Gators must win in a tough road environment against a team that has been playing well. For Florida, all of the injuries and lack of offense will finally catch up to them as LSU forces Appleby into some mistakes and Guice and Fournette have a big game. LSU by a touchdown.
