April 12, 2017Florida redshirt freshman quarterback Kyle Trask will undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus, which will keep him out for almost two months.
If Feleipe Franks had not already solidified himself as the Gators’ starting quarterback, his path just got a little bit easier.
His teammate, and fellow redshirt freshman quarterback, Kyle Trask will undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus, as reported by Gator Country.
Trask, a former 3-star recruit from Manvel, Texas, was less than stellar in the Orange and Blue Debut, as he completed 4-of-13 passes for 31 yards and an interception.
Now, he’ll miss the next 4-6 weeks but should be back to normal by the time fall camp rolls around.
As mentioned, Trask had already fallen behind Franks in their position battle by a significant amount. The latter completed 8-of-14 passes for 199 yards while tossing a touchdown strike to star wide receiver Antonio Callaway to combat Trask in Florida’s spring game.
When they entered as true freshmen last season, Trask was seemingly ahead of Franks despite both carrying redshirts while Luke Del Rio and Austin Appleby took the starting snaps.
Now, it’s clear. Trask has been idle while Franks has soared past him on the depth chart.
Trask is expected to re-enter the fight for the starting spot in fall camp, but it’s hard to improve without being medically cleared.
While sidelines, Trask will need to use this time to nourish the intangible part of his game. Florida fans have heard and read about how he has been unable to fully grasp the playbook during his time in Gainesville, but this could be a key moment for the young quarterback to grow his mind.
He can’t put in the work on the field, but he can still put in the work in the film room.
And, if he does, he might have a shot at a photo finish when Jim McElwain eventually names a starting quarterback for Florida’s season opener.
