March 10, 2016The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles have made it to the NCAA Tournament. Here’s a preview of the team and a prediction of how they’ll do during March Madness.
Team: Florida Gulf Coast Eagles
Record: 20-13
The Eagles are back in the NCAA Tournament, and they are led by Marc Eddy Norelia, a double-double waiting to happen who also is disruptive on the defensive end. At 6-foot-8, 218 pounds, Norelia has the length and the explosiveness to take over games on both ends of the court. He gets help from Christian Terrell and Zach Johnson, two players who balance the floor and keep opponents honest. This team can shoot, which makes it a threat against any club that takes it lightly.
A lack of size is a problem, and in their only two meetings with top-caliber teams, the Eagles struggled to be competitive. FGCU’s depth is great, but beyond the first couple of players the drop off is somewhat steep. It’s important for the Eagles to quickly get over the feeling of just being happy to be at the Dance, too.
Dunk City isn’t walking through that door, and although FGCU will come into the tourney with a sleeper reputation, this team isn’t going to be around long. Norelia is a solid player, but this team’s size is going to be a killer. One-and-done wouldn’t be a surprise.
