Florida and Georgia have agreed to continue their historic matchup in Jacksonville through 2021.
It’s been 82 years since Florida and Georgia first turned Jacksonville, Fla. into the home of “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.”
When the Gators and Bulldogs meet at EverBank Field on Oct. 29, it’ll continue the longstanding neutral field rivalry.
You can now tack five more years onto the tradition. Florida and Georgia have agreed to a five-year extension, keeping the rivalry game at EverBank through 2021.
Florida-Georgia (or Georgia-Florida, depending on which side of the rivalry you sit) is an event every Gator and Bulldog circles on the calendars. University of Florida Director of Athletics Jeremy Foley attributed the credit for the extension to the host.
“We are excited to continue the tradition of playing the Florida-Georgia game in Jacksonville,” Foley said. “As I’ve said a number of times over the years, the game belongs in Jacksonville. Thanks to the hard work and cooperation from the City of Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Jaguars and our counterparts at Georgia, it will continue to be in Jacksonville.”
While the new agreement still requires an approval by the Jacksonville City Council, it’s difficult to imagine the extension being denied.
The creative clash of orange, blue, red and black has painted Jacksonville for decades. The rivalry has become ingrained in the city, stadium and all across North Florida.
It’s difficult to imagine the game in any other setting. This five-year extension likely won’t be the last, as Jacksonville hovers the century mark as the official home of the most tension-riddled cocktail party you’ll ever tailgate at.
