The Florida Gators quarterback competition is still being paced by Oregon State transfer Luke Del Rio.
March 14, 2016Luke Del Rio is still the man to beat in the Florida Gators quarterback competition.
The Florida Gators’ quarterback competition is the biggest question mark surrounding Jim McElwain’s team this spring, and it’s been answered ever so slightly early on during practices.
Last week, McElwain informed the media that Luke Del Rio had a leg up on the competition, and on Monday he reaffirmed that.
“Yeah. I mean, and should be (ahead),” McElwain said in regards to Del Rio setting the pace. “He’s been here a full year. For him, he’s got a little bit of a leg up from a knowledge standpoint with what those other guys have really done. I’ve been impressed with Luke and how he’s helping those other guys.”
Del Rio, the son of Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio, sat out the 2015 season after transferring from Oregon State. He was recruited to Alabama by Doug Nussmeier, who is now the Florida Gators’ offensive coordinator.
While Del Rio is establishing himself as the guy to beat, McElwain is also high on the performance of the other quarterbacks.
“The guys are doing pretty good,” McElwain said. “You can tell that they’ve done a really good job in the classroom. They know when they make a mistake. You can see it kind of register a little bit.”
The current tone in Gainesville is a far cry from how Florida’s quarterback situation ended last season.
