Florida Gators football recruiting update for the week of March 15, 2016 as Jim McElwain analyzes the 2017 crop of prospects.

Spring practice in Gainesville, Fla. didn’t have the best start.

The Florida Gators are without Treon Harris and wide receiver Antonio Callaway, both of whom haven’t been with the team since January.

The absence of Harris is critical for his development, since he was scheduled to work out at wide receiver instead of quarterback this spring. The reps he’s missing are crucial.

Callaway’s absence is much more vital in the broad scope. With Demarcus Robinson having left for the NFL Draft, Callaway is expected be the team’s No. 1 wideout.

With Harris and Callaway removed from the competition for now, Florida is looking for some if its younger receivers to step up, namely Joshua Hammond, Freddie Swain, Kalif Jackson, etc.

Though the Gators still need to figure out who will be throwing the ball to them.

Transfer quarterbacks Austin Appleby and Luke Del Rio came in as the favorites, and it’s been Del Rio who holds a slim lead. However, freshmen Feleipe Franks and Kyle Trask have opened eyes, and they should heat up the competition as spring continues.

That won’t stop McElwain from looking to add quarterbacks and receivers in the near future.

Below is a sketch of how Florida’s 2017 recruiting class currently looks.
