Jim McElwain’s Gators added two commits on Saturday when 4-star cornerback Brad Stewart and 3-star outside linebacker Nick Smith committed to Florida.

Last week, the Gators lost a key member of their 2017 recruiting class when 4-star cornerback Elijah Blades announced his decommitment.

But Jim McElwain and his staff didn’t waste any time in finding someone to take Blades’ spot in the class.

On Saturday, 4-star prospect Brad Stewart committed to Florida. The New Orleans native is ranked as the No. 15 cornerback and No. 128 overall player in the country.

Stewart kept it simple by saying, “Gators take care of Gators. [I’m] truly blessed to be a part of the family.”

But he wasn’t the only addition the Gators made.

Earlier that day, 3-star recruit Nick Smith also committed to Florida. The Orlando native is ranked as the No. 42 outside linebacker in the nation and the No. 4 outside linebacker in the state of Florida. He released a statement regarding his pledge.

“I would like to begin by thanking my parents and my family because without them I wouldn’t be in the position I am today. I want to thank the entire coaching staff and every university that has given me a chance to play football and continue my education free of cost. I’ve had my ups and downs with recruiting, and I’m relieved that I’ve found a place I can call home for the next four years to continue my education and athletic career. I’ve built many relationships throughout this process, but it’s time to shut it down and get ready for the next level. So, without further ado, I will be committing to the University of Florida.”

With the additions of Stewart and Smith, the Gators have 16 total commits and are up to No. 22 in the 2017 recruiting class rankings after previously falling outside the top 30 with Blades’ decommitment.

But Florida could be setting up for a strong finish with National Signing Day looming. The Gators are in the running for a number of recruits, including 5-star offensive guard Tedarrell Slaton and 4-star outside linebacker Levi Jones, among others.
