February 6, 2019The top unsigned wide receiver in the 2019 recruiting class is leaving his home state for college after flipping his commitment to a conference rival on National Signing Day.
Five-star wide receiver George Pickens, a 6-3, 190-pound receiver from Hoover, Alabama who committed to Auburn in June 2017, flipped and signed his National Letter of Intent with Georgia on Wednesday.
Pickens is the No. 24 prospect in the 2019 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He’s the No. 1 player in the state of Alabama and the No. 4 wide receiver prospect in the country.
He’s the fifth five-star recruit to sign a letter of intent for Georgia’s 2019 recruiting class, which started the day ranked No. 2 nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, behind only Alabama.
The wide receiver joins defensive end Nolan Smith, linebacker Nakobe Dean, defensive tackle Travon Walker and center Clay Webb as the five-stars in the Bulldogs’ recruiting class.
Pickens visited Tennessee last weekend, giving the Volunteers the opportunity to try to flip his commitment in the final days before National Signing Day. He also received offers from LSU and Miami (FL), among others.
The Under Armour All-American has been timed running a 4.73-second 40-yard dash and 4.37-second shuttle run. His vertical jump is 33 inches.
247Sports Recruiting Analyst John Garcia Jr. compared Pickens to former Clemson wide receiver Mike Williams, who now plays for the L.A. Chargers, and projected Pickens as a future second-round NFL Draft pick.
“Big, physical play-maker who can overwhelm a defender before or after the catch,” Garcia wrote of Pickens.
Pickens will help replace the production of wide receivers Riley Ridley and Mecole Hardman, the team’s top two receivers last season who are headed to the NFL.
