December 19, 2018In a recruiting battle for a top-10 prospect that featured reigning SEC East and West champions Georgia and Alabama, the Crimson Tide came out on top. Five-star running back Trey Sanders announced his college decision to Alabama on Wednesday as he signed his letter of intent on National Signing Day.
The 6-foot, 214-pound running back from IMG Academy is ranked as the No. 5 prospect and No. 1 running back nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He chose Alabama over offers from Florida, Florida State, Georgia and Texas, among others.
Sanders took official visits to all five schools this fall, most recently Florida on December 14. He’ll now be one of the headliner prospects in an Alabama recruiting class that’s currently projected to be the No. 1 class in the country, according to 247Sports.
Sanders’ measurables include a 4.52-second 40-yard dash, 4.34-second shuttle run and 35-inch vertical leap.
Given his size and frame, he compares to Chicago Bears running back Jordan Howard, according to 247Sports. The site projects him as a future first-round NFL draft pick.
The Port Saint Joe, Florida native will join a talented running back corps in Tuscaloosa.
While senior running back Damien Harris, the team’s leading rusher this season, is in his final season of eligibility, the return of sophomore Najee Harris (679 rushing yards, 6.7 ypc, 4 TD), junior Josh Jacobs (495 rushing yards, 5.3 ypc, 11 TD) and sophomore Brian Robinson Jr. (272 rushing yards, 4.3 ypc, 2 TD) means Alabama will likely have another deep and versatile running back committee next season.
