Oregon received a letter of intent from potentially the highest-rated signee in the history of its football program. Five-star defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux from Thousand Oaks, California, signed his letter of intent on Wednesday to join the Ducks’ 2019 recruiting class.

Thibodeaux, who’s rated as the No. 2 prospect nationally according to the 247Sports Composite rankings and No. 1 by ESPN, is the highest-ranked Oregon signee in 247Sports’ database, which dates back to 1999. The Ducks didn’t have to worry about other schools trying to flip Thibodeaux’s commitment as the 6-4, 239-pound defensive end committed to Oregon on Saturday, then put pen to paper four days later.

He chose Oregon over Alabama, Florida, Florida State and USC, among others.

Thibodeaux has recorded a 4.67 40-yard dash, 4.21-second shuttle run and 32-inch vertical jump, according to 247Sports. The site projects him as a future top-10 pick in the NFL Draft who compares to Miami Dolphins defensive end Robert Quinn, who is a two-time Pro Bowl selection and former First Team All-Pro.

The California native received a visit from Florida State coach Willie Taggart on December 11 while Alabama coach Nick Saban visited him the week prior. But Thibodeaux will stay on the West Coast, as he revealed live on ESPN as he put on an Oregon visor and made the Ducks’ “O” with his hands.

In his senior season, Thibodeaux recorded 99 tackles, 28 tackles for loss, 20 sacks and three forced fumbles, showing why he earned an invitation to the Under Armour All-America Game.

He’ll be a valuable part of Oregon’s defensive front as the Ducks try to shore up that side of the ball. This season they rank 44th nationally against the run (143 yards per game) and 95th against the pass (247 yards per game).
