LSU is known for sending star defensive backs like Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu into the NFL, and the Tigers will try to continue that tradition after landing arguably the best cornerback in the 2019 recruiting class on Wednesday. Five-star cornerback Derek Stingley, a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who attends Dunham School, signed his letter of intent to LSU on National Signing Day.

Stingley, who’s listed at 6-0 and 188 pounds, is rated as the No. 3 player in his class and the No. 1 cornerback, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He chose LSU over Alabama, Florida and Texas, among others.

The Tigers will get an elite athlete next season as Stingley has recorded a 4.3 40-yard dash and a 42-inch vertical leap. He projects to be a first-round NFL Draft pick who compares to New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore, according to 247Sports.

He took an official visit to Florida on June 1, but committed to LSU less than three weeks later. He took his official visit to LSU on December 7, and he officially signed to stay in-state and become a Tiger on Wednesday.

Stingley had 64 tackles, 11 interceptions and six pass break-ups in his junior season.

Now he’ll headline LSU’s top-five 2019 recruiting class that includes commitments from three five-star recruits and eight four-star prospects.

The Tigers will lose All-American cornerback Greedy Williams, who’s a potential top-10 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, meaning there will be some changes in LSU’s secondary next season.

Based on his recruiting ranking and his college choice, don’t be surprised if Stingley follows the path of Peterson, Mathieu, Williams and the rest of the talented LSU defensive backs before him who have made life difficult for SEC quarterbacks before going on to the NFL.
