While it came from a most unlikely place, the Monarchs may finally have found their successor to QB Taylor Heinicke. Junior WR David Washington moved behind center, leading ODU to a comeback win over Charlotte with 402 total yards and four touchdowns.
The Monarchs will need Washington to be prolific, because the defense is a pushover that’s allowed an average of 36 points in five FBS games. The mix of Alex Gardner’s running and Alex McGough to Thomas Owens through the air will help the Panthers control the clock and the scoreboard.
Washington is an interesting story, but he’ll be facing much better defensive personnel, like CB Richard Leonard and D-ends Denzell Perine and Michael Wakefield, this week. The Panthers will use takeaways and Gardner’s first 100-yard day of 2015 to even their record with four games remaining.
Prediction: Florida International 38, Old Dominion 23, Line: Florida International -14, o/u: 53
