A look at the fastest 40-yard dash times by running backs at the 2016 NFL Combine.
The running backs took center stage at the NFL Combine on Friday, with a surprising player coming through with the fastest 40-yard-dash time. Here are the top 10 times, along with some notables.
1. Keith Marshall (Georgia) – 4.31 seconds
He didn’t reach Chris Johnson’s 4.24 time from 2008, but the former Bulldog ran an official 4.31 to record the fastest time. Never able to reach his full potential during college due to injury, the time should raise some heads among teams and scouts, and it will most likely help Marshall’s draft stock.
2. Tyler Ervin (San Jose State) – 4.41 seconds
Ervin came in a tenth of a second slower than Marshall in the 40-yard dash. Ervin had a breakout season with the Spartans in 2015, rushing for 1,601 yards and 13 touchdowns.
3. Kenyan Drake (Alabama) – 4.45 seconds
A backup to Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry for the Crimson Tide, Drake made his mark in the 40. Drake saw limited time in 2015, but finished his four-year career with 1,495 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns.
4. Daniel Lasco (California) – 4.46 seconds
The 6’1, 205 lbs. former Golden Bear made his name known to scouts, recording the fourth-fastest time of all the running backs.
T-5. Ezekiel Elliott (Ohio State) – 4.47 seconds
The bruiser out of Ohio State showed that he has speed along with strength. Elliott is considered by most as a first-round pick.
T-5. Marshaun Coprich (Illinois State) – 4.47 seconds
The 5’9 speedster rushed for 1,967 yards and 23 touchdowns for the Redbirds in 2015.
T-5. Wendell Smallwood (West Virginia) – 4.47 seconds
Declared for the draft after his junior season, in which he rushed for 1,519 yards and nine touchdowns for the Mountaineers.
T-8. Josh Ferguson (Illinois) – 4.48 seconds
A dual-threat for the Illini, Ferguson rushed for 2,586 yards and 18 touchdowns in his career, while also recording 1,507 yards receiving and catching eight touchdowns passes.
T-8. C.J. Prosise (Notre Dame) – 4.48 seconds
Before suffering a couple of injuries during the 2015 season, Prosise rushed for 1,032 and 11 touchdowns for the Irish.
10. DeAndre Washington (Texas Tech) – 4.49 seconds
The stout back rushed for 1,492 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2015 in coach Kliff Klingsbury’s hurry-up offense.
Notables
Derrick Henry (Alabama) – 4.54 seconds
He’s tall, strong and fast. Henry, coming off his Heisman-winning season, recorded a 4.54 in the 40-yard dash. Henry ran for 2,219 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2015 to lead the Tide to a national title.
Alex Collins (Arkansas) – 4.59 seconds
Collins declared for the NFL Draft after spending three seasons in Fayetteville, Ark., where he racked up 3,703 yards rushing and 36 touchdowns.
Kelvin Taylor (Florida) – 4.6 seconds
Kelvin Taylor, son of NFL great Fred Taylor, rushed for 1,035 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2015, and he decided to forego his senior season to enter the NFL Draft.
