January 30, 2017Four-star safety Evan Fields committed to Arizona State on Monday, giving the Sun Devils 16 total commits in the 2017 recruiting class.
When the Sun Devils landed 4-star cornerback Alex Perry on Dec. 13, the belief was they were in a great position to land his Bishop Gorman High School teammate Bubba Bolden, a 4-star safety. However, at the 2017 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, Bolden instead re-joined USC’s class.
Todd Graham’s staff still hasn’t given up on Bolden, but it did manage to add a safety to the class on Monday when 4-star prospect Evan Fields committed to Arizona State. He chose the Sun Devils over Kansas State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State and UCLA, which were the four other schools to receive official visits.
Fields, an Oklahoma City native, is ranked as the No. 27 safety in the country and the No. 1 safety in the state of Oklahoma. He released a statement regarding his decision to pick the Sun Devils.
“Thanks to every school that took the time to recruit me and everyone that supported me and believed in me. Most of all, thank you, God, for everything. Forks Up.”
At 6-foot-1, 187 lbs Fields closes on the ball quickly and consistently does his job as the last line of defense when stopping the running game. Every now and then, he’ll pop a halfback with a big hit and send a message. He’s reliable in coverage, too, but he makes his presence felt when meeting a tailback with a lowered shoulder and a ton of momentum built up.
As a senior this past season, Fields recorded 81 tackles and two interceptions in seven games.
Arizona State now has 16 total commits in the cycle and moved up from No. 42 to No. 37 in the 2017 recruiting class rankings.
