Kirby Smart’s team got things going early on National Signing Day, as they reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the 2017 recruiting class rankings with one of its latest commits.

Three-star prospect Eric Stokes committed to Georgia on Wednesday. He chose the Bulldogs over their rival, Florida. Despite having spent and enjoying an official visit to Gainesville on the weekend of Jan. 14, Stokes took an official visit to Athens a week later, which helped him make his decision.

Stokes, who’s from Covington, Georgia, is ranked as the No. 37 athlete in the country and the No. 7 athlete in the Peach State. He’ll likely make the full-time switch to defense at the next level and play cornerback for UGA.

At 6-foot-1, 172 lbs Stokes is the epitome of speed and quickness. His length makes him an intriguing prospect for Smart, a former defensive back himself. The Bulldogs’ head coach will have to work with defensive coordinator Mel Tucker to help Stokes hone in on winning those crucial one-on-one battles at the line of scrimmage with wide receivers.

However, he certainly has the burst and speed needed to recover if he does get beaten off the line.

With Stokes now on board, Georgia has 25 total commits and, as mentioned, jumped over Alabama to take the top spot in the rankings.
