Emory Jones recruiting profile features the No. 22 player in the CI 25 for 2018. Jones could end up developing into an elite collegiate quarterback and a Heisman Trophy contender.
February 14, 2017Recruiting profile featuring Emory Jones, the No. 22 prospect in the inaugural CI 25 recruiting rankings.
CI 25 Overall Ranking: No. 22
CI 25 Position Ranking: No. 4
Hometown: Franklin, Georgia
School: Heard County High School
Position: QB
Height: 6’3.5″
Weight: 177 lbs
When asked to pick one player in this recruiting class capable of contending for a Heisman Trophy one day, Emory Jones is the first name that comes to mind. The arm strength is a plus, and it will likely improve once the mechanics get tweaked and tightened up. Jones can flick the ball effortlessly at times, almost like Tyrod Taylor in a way. If he consistently gets his lower body into those throws, his deep ball will get smoother.
With his ability to throw on the run and from the pocket, Jones is the ideal quarterback for Urban Meyer’s offense. He would also thrive in the system Dabo Swinney has implemented with Clemson, and the same could be said for the Hokies, who are in need of a quarterback in the 2018 class.
“Jones is an athletic quarterback who can hurt defenses with his legs, but he prefers to sit in the pocket and use his arm. He has a live arm and he throws a very good deep ball.” – Scout
“He may be the best quarterback in this class but we’re still learning about him. … The athletic, fluid thrower will be one to watch over the next 10 months.” – Barton Simmons, 247Sports
Status: Committed – Ohio State
Commitment Date: July 29, 2016
Notable Offers: Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Miami, Tennessee and Virginia Tech
The problem for the Buckeyes in Jones’ recruitment is the fact they’re currently stacked at quarterback. Joe Burrow, Dwayne Haskins and Tate Martell will all be ahead of him on the depth chart if he ends up signing with Ohio State. That could leave the door open for another school to slide in and persuade him with early playing time.
With Jacob Eason and Jake Fromm already in Athens, it’s possible Georgia comes into play, but it’s not likely. Keep an eye on Miami and Virginia Tech, who are both trying to answer questions regarding the quarterback position. Clemson could make a play despite having signed Hunter Johnson and Chase Brice in the 2017 cycle. Plus, more offers will continue to roll in for Jones, which could have a big impact on how his recruitment shakes out depending on who offers him.
