January 23, 2017Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield is the early favorite to win the 2017 Heisman Trophy, while a couple of fellow signal callers are right behind him.
Five Oklahoma Sooners have had the honor of bringing the Heisman Trophy back to Norman, the last being Sam Bradford in 2008. In 2017, quarterback Baker Mayfield will look to make that number six, and per Bovada, he is the early favorite for college football’s most prestigious individual award.
Mayfield, who threw for 3,965 yards and 40 touchdowns this past season, starts at +550, closely followed by Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett at +600. Barrett decided to pass up the NFL Draft and return to Columbus for his senior season with the Buckeyes.
Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, the 2016 Heisman Trophy winner, enters as the third favorite at +700. Only Archie Griffin of Ohio State has won the award twice, earning the honor in 1974-75.
Following Jackson are three players that played in an epic Rose Bowl this January, with USC quarterback Sam Darnold coming in at +900 while Penn State running back Saquon Barkley and quarterback Trace McSorley start at +1000. The Trojans defeated the Nittany Lions 52-49 in a back-and-forth game. Washington quarterback Jake Browning, who led the Huskies to the College Football Playoff this past season, is also at +1000.
Two dark horses to watch out for are a pair of SEC running backs in Auburn’s Kam Pettway and Alabama’s Bo Scarbrough. Despite missing four games due to injuries, Pettway (+2500) led the SEC in rushing with 1,224 yards, while Scarbrough (+1500) exploded in the latter part of the season before suffering a leg injury in the CFP National Championship Game.
