    Why You Need To Care

A couple of old rivals, Duke and Wake Forest, renew acquaintances this weekend in Winston-Salem. Both are essentially playing out the string and competing for instate bragging rights, though the Blue Devils have qualified for a bowl game. They haven’t exactly been bowl-worthy, losing four straight, during one of the toughest stretches of the David Cutcliffe era. The Demon Deacons continue to be a plucky team that’s good enough to compete, yet lacks the personnel to actually break through with an upset. They’ve dropped five straight and are in danger of going 3-9 in each Dave Clawson’s first two seasons.

    Why Duke Will Win

Wake Forest can’t score … again. For the fourth year in a row, the Demon Deacons are going to average fewer than 20 points per game, the central reason why they’ve won just once since Week 3. The running game has no steam and the team commits too many turnovers. Duke, for all of its problems, rings up almost 31 points per game and is far more dangerous now that dual-threat QB Thomas Sirk has returned.

    Why Wake Forest Will Win

The Blue Devils are a mess. Along with the four-game losing streak, there’ve been suspensions and a general sense that the program has lost its direction and intensity. The once-surly defense has yielded an average of 42 points over the last five games, which could create opportunities for Deacon quarterbacks Kendall Hinton and John Wolford. Plus, the Wake D is a scrappy bunch, led by linebackers Brandon Chubb, Marquel Lee and Hunter Williams, that’s held Florida State, Clemson and Notre Dame below their season scoring average.

    Player Who Matters

While Hinton is just a part-timer, the Deacons need to find a way to get him more involved in the offense. He’s been the team’s best runner this year, showing speed and quickness outside the tackles. Clawson will also want to turn loose Wolford, the better passer, since Duke has given up 15 touchdown passes over the last five games.

    What’s Going To Happen?

While Duke already has one foot in the offseason, this game still really matters to Wake Forest. And it’ll be reflected in the outcome. The Deacons will perform with more passion and energy from start to finish, ending the season on a high note behind the play of an underrated D and the offense’s best production since September.
