There appears to be some momentum building in Gainesville, and Jim McElwain’s staff is going to ride it into National Signing Day.
The latest addition to the Gators’ 2017 recruiting class came on Sunday when 3-star prospect Donovan Stiner flipped his commitment from Houston to Florida.
Stiner, who’s from Bellaire, Texas, officially visited Gainesville this past weekend.
He’s ranked as the No. 78 safety in the country and the No. 9 safety in the state of Texas. He released a statement regarding his decision to flip from the Cougars to the Gators.
“I would like to thank the University of Houston for a great opportunity, but after further consideration, I have decided to commit to the University of Florida.”
At 6-foot-1, 185 lbs Stiner has the ability to step up into the box and make plays all over the field. As a senior this past season, he recorded 56 total tackles, three tackles for loss, two interceptions, three fumble recoveries, two defensive touchdowns and one sack.
The pledge from Stiner comes a day after the Gators picked up two commitments from 4-star cornerback Brad Stewart and 3-star outside linebacker Nick Smith. The timing of these three commitments come on the heels of a decommitment by 4-star cornerback Elijah Blades, who will likely end up with either Nebraska or USC.
Florida now has 17 total commits in the cycle and is up to No. 18 in the 2017 recruiting class rankings.
