Donnel Pumphrey Breaks Ron Dayne’s FBS Career Rushing Record

San Diego State's Donnel Pumphrey broke Ron Dayne's FBS career rushing record in the Las Vegas Bowl.

    December 19, 2016

San Diego State RB Donnel Pumphrey is in the record books. In the Las Vegas Bowl, the Aztec broke Ron Dayne’s FBS career rushing record.

On the very first day of the 2016-17 college football postseason, Donnel Pumphrey made history.

The San Diego State running back broke the FBS career rushing record, surpassing former Wisconsin star Ron Dayne’s mark of 6,397 yards, in a 34-10 Las Vegas Bowl victory over Houston on Saturday. The mark was broken in the fourth quarter, and the shifty RB finished the day with 115 yards to give him 6,405 for his career.

Of course, the record comes with a bit of an asterisk. When Dayne was with the Badgers, he rushed for 728 yards in four bowl games. However, the NCAA did not start counting postseason totals toward records until 2002; Dayne’s career pre-dated that year (he played in Madison from 1996-99). Including bowl games, Dayne’s mark would be 7,125 yards.

But nothing should diminish what Pumphrey has done, as he now sits as the FBS all-time leading rusher. The crazy aspect of Pumphrey’s senior year with the Aztecs is that Rashaad Penny was an accomplished rusher as well, passing the 1,000-yard mark. Imagine what Pumphrey could have done with even more carries.

When the Las Vegas native finished his 15-yard sweep to the right side of the field in the fourth quarter to break the mark, his Aztec teammates came over and mobbed him in what was a touching moment. Earlier in the game, Pumphrey had a 32-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter that gave San Diego State the lead for good on a day that saw the defense intercept four of Houston quarterback Greg Ward Jr.’s passes in the second half.

Pumphrey also passed Texas’ D’Onta Foreman for the 2016 season rushing lead (2,133).
