The storylines wrote themselves when Luka Doncic and the Mavericks faced off against Trae Young and the Hawks Wednesday. The two players were swapped in a draft day trade that will be talked about for decades. Both were expected to be the face of their respective franchise. And fair or not, they will be compared to each other forever.

In a potentially foreshadowing game, Young’s Hawks took down Doncic’s Mavericks 111-104. Doncic got off to a hot start, but Young had the last laugh.

The Mavericks exploded in the first quarter with Doncic spearheading the effort. He went 4-for-7 in the opening quarter and also hit a couple free throws as Dallas jumped out to a 42-22 lead. Young, meanwhile, was 0-for-4 from the field, but did manage to reject one of Doncic’s shots.

Doncic didn’t play much in the second quarter and missed his lone shot attempt. Young wasn’t in the game much either, making one free throw before sitting down. The Hawks were able to climb back into the game, but Dallas still had a 58-48 lead at halftime.

The third quarter showcased both players struggling from the floor. Doncic went 1-for-6 in the period and also committed two poor turnovers. Young and the Hawks were unable to take advantage. The mercurial guard shot 1-for-5 in the third quarter and Dallas still maintained an 87-80 edge.

Young took over in the final quarter. He went 2-for-3 from the field, including scoring the go-ahead basket for the Hawks with 3:34 left. Young was also deadly from the charity stripe, hitting eight of his nine free throws to ice the game. He dished a key assist to Kent Bazemore, who finished the game with 32 points.

Doncic, on the other hand, went 2-for-4 from the floor to finish with 21 points.

The final stat line gives Doncic the edge in points and efficiency, but Young’s timeliness rescued the Hawks after they were in an early hole. As everyone saw during his college career, Young was hot and cold from the field and his shooting often singlehandedly determined Oklahoma’s fate. He was cold for three quarters Wednesday night, but turned it on the right time.

Doncic is currently the more NBA-ready player and it initially looks like the Mavericks “won” the draft day trade, but will Wednesday’s night action repeat itself over time and give Young and the Hawks the edge?
