Five-star wide receiver DeVonta Smith has two SEC rivals and two ACC rivals chasing after his commitment, but a late coaching departure may have the biggest impact in the recruitment of the nation’s No. 3 wide receiver.

A week ago, it appeared everything had been the same as it had been throughout the entire recruitment for 5-star prospect DeVonta Smith. The race has been Alabama’s to lose.

However, there has been one major development in the past few days: wide receivers coach Billy Napier has left the Crimson Tide to become the new offensive coordinator at Arizona State.

That now puts Smith, the nation’s No. 3 wide receiver and No. 26 overall player, in a precarious position. The Amite, Louisiana native had included Florida State, LSU and Miami in his final four schools alongside Alabama. However, he canceled his official visit to Coral Gables, so it looks as though he’ll be choosing from the Seminoles, Tigers and Tide.

New LSU offensive coordinator Matt Canada has helped the Tigers’ case to land Smith, according to SEC Country. And when considering wide receivers coach Dameyune Craig isn’t expected to leave Baton Rouge anytime soon, the arrow for Smith’s commitment now appears to be pointing toward the Bayou Bengals.

Smith officially visited LSU on Jan. 13, two days before officially visiting FSU. A week after taking the trip to Baton Rouge, he spent an official visit in Tuscaloosa. Alabama would love to add Smith, but with Jerry Jeudy and Tyrell Shavers already committed, the need for a receiver isn’t as notable as it once was for Nick Saban’s team.

Jimbo Fisher’s ‘Noles will continue to make a play, but this will most likely end up being a tug-of-war battle between Alabama and LSU.
