Devonta Smith has Alabama on his list of top schools despite being from Louisiana.
A month removed from National Signing Day for the 2016 class, college football is already seeing the 2017 cycle spark up.
Some of those sparks are flying in Amite, La., the home of 4-star recruit Devonta Smith, the No. 8 wide receiver and No. 46 overall prospect in the 2017 class.
Despite being in LSU’s back yard, Smith has Alabama on his list of top schools. He took a visit to Tuscaloosa, Ala. this past weekend, and he told SEC Country the Crimson Tide is really growing on him.
“They are one of my top schools because of the relationships with the coaching staff and how comfortable I am with the school,” Smith said.
Aside from simply being Alabama, the Crimson Tide have one ace up the sleeve: Shyheim Carter. A 4-star cornerback and Alabama signee from the 2016 class, Carter is close friends with Smith. Smith has said that his relationship with Carter won’t have a big impact on his decision, but having another recruiter on the inside is in no way a bad thing for the Tide.
Though Smith had previously visited Tuscaloosa, his most recent trip was the first time being accompanied by both his mother and brother.
“To be honest, I didn’t do anything because I’ve been there so much,” Smith said. “I just went to talk to the coaches, that’s pretty much it. It was really for my mother to get a feel for it to meet the coaches and get to know what kind of people they are. She liked it, but she didn’t really tell me anything about what they said.”
A former Georgia commit, Smith reopened his recruitment in January. According to him, Georgia is one of six schools to offer him so far, with the others being LSU, Florida State, Baylor and Ole Miss and Alabama.
