We’re two days into the recruiting dead period, and Mark Richt’s staff has already added another commit to their 2017 recruiting class.

On Tuesday, 3-star wide receiver Derrick Smith committed to Miami despite holding additional offers from Kentucky, Mississippi State, North Carolina, USC and others. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound receiver from Jacksonville, Florida, released a statement regarding his decision to pledge to the Hurricanes.

“First off, I want to thank God for the opportunity to be able to play at the next level. After talking it over with my family and coaches, as of right now, I will be shutting down my recruitment, and I will be committing to the University of Miami.”

The addition of Smith gives the Hurricanes 21 total commits in the cycle, and Miami sits at No. 13 in the 2017 recruiting class rankings — ahead of in-state rivals Florida State (No. 17) and Florida (No. 22).

Smith is the third wide receiver in the Hurricanes’ class. He joins 3-star prospect Evidence Njoku, the nation’s No. 95 receiver, and 3-star recruit Kevaughn Dingle, the nation’s No. 91 receiver.

If there is anything Smith can bring to Miami’s passing attack, it’s physicality. He has experience playing safety as well, so there could be potential for a flip to the other side of the ball if it benefits all parties involved. Going off that, Miami currently has three safeties committed in this class: 4-star prospect Trajan Bandy, Amari Carter and Billy Gibson Jr. Carter and Gibson are both rated as 3-star recruits.
