With Kevin Hogan likely set to be drafted late in the 2016 NFL Draft, Stanford would then have three quarterbacks selected since 2007. Trent Edwards was a third-round pick by the Buffalo Bills that year, and the Indianapolis Colts obviously drafted Andrew Luck No. 1 overall in 2012.

Davis Mills might be joining that list in a few years. Well, maybe we should let him get through his high school career first, but the 4-star quarterback has decided to follow in the aforementioned quarterbacks’ footsteps.

Mills, from Norcross, Ga., committed to the Stanford Cardinal Tuesday morning in a message he tweeted out.
Mills is the No. 8-ranked quarterback and the No. 66 overall prospect in the 2017 recruiting class. He’s the Cardinal’s fifth commit in the class.

Stanford only has two quarterbacks on its roster right now: senior Ryan Burns and junior Keller Chryst. It also tacked on 2016 signee K.J. Costello.

While there’s still plenty of time left in the 2017 cycle, landing a commitment from Mills is a big deal for head coach David Shaw. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Stanford chase another quarterback in the class to pair with Mills.

Quarterback competition is a good problem to have.
