Five-star cornerback Darnay Holmes committed to UCLA, giving the Bruins 13 total commits in the 2017 recruiting class.

The recruitment for the nation’s No. 9 overall player has finally concluded.

On Saturday, at the 2017 U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, 5-star prospect Darnay Holmes committed to UCLA. The Bruins now have 13 total commits in the 2017 recruiting class and moved up from No. 28 to No. 23 in the recruiting class rankings.

Holmes, who’s ranked as the No. 1 cornerback in the country, chose UCLA over Ohio State and USC while holding additional offers from Alabama, Auburn, Cal, Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame, Oregon and a few other Power Five programs. However, he spent his official visits at Michigan, Ohio State, USC and UCLA.

At 5-foot-10, 185 lbs., Holmes may not possess elite size, but he explodes out of his breaks and is one of the toughest, quickest defensive backs in the country. You won’t find many wide receivers that Holmes won’t be able to go step-for-step with and shadow on routes.

He also utilizes that speed on special teams, as he’s a reliable option on both kick returns and punt returns.

However, it’s not as though Holmes doesn’t bring some physicality to the field. He’s nasty in bump-and-run coverage and loves to jam at the line of scrimmage. He’s an all-around cornerback and will only improve as he refines his footwork and learns with experience.

With Jedd Fisch now serving as the Bruins’ offensive coordinator, there is a chance Holmes could play on the offensive side of the ball as well.
