Damon Stoudamire sat down with The Seth Davis Show to discuss, among other things, the challenges of being a head college basketball coach.

While glamorous from the outside, being the head coach for a college basketball program shares characteristics with nearly every management job in America. When able to hone in on a singular task, life is great and stresses are, if not minimized, at least manageable. It’s all the extraneous tasks that add up – meetings, answering emails, budgeting time, etc.

During a recent interview with The Seth Davis Show, Pacific Tigers head coach Damon Stoudamire discussed all the added responsibilities that come along with being a coach, outside of Xs and Os.

“Yeah, it’s the management, and really trying to figure out what’s important and what’s not for that given day – whether it’s a phone call or email,” Stoudamire told Davis. “A lot of it is not basketball related, to be honest with you. So getting to basketball, that’s the joy. That’s the easy part of it. But a lot of it is whether it’s academics, whether it’s meeting with your AD or whatever it might be. It’s just so many other things that are involved.”

His parsing is a common refrain from many within the coaching industry: that the job infiltrates every facet of life. It’s also something that, according to Stoudamire, is nearly incomprehensible until in the throes of the profession.

“It feels different. Believe me, the time demands … I never knew.”
