January 10, 2017Dabo Swinney spoke with the media the morning after winning the national championship. Here are some notable quotes from the Clemson head coach.
Dabo Swinney has led the Clemson Tigers to its first national title since 1981 after a last-second, 35-31 victory over Alabama in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on Monday. For Swinney, this is only the beginning.
“The best is yet to come for us,” Swinney said. “I mean this is not the end-all. You never arrive.”
Deshaun Watson found Hunter Renfrow for the go-ahead touchdown with one-second left as the Tigers drove the field for the title-winning score. Watson threw for 420 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions in the win.
Here are some other quotes from Swinney following his first national championship.
On how he slept last night
“I slept an hour. I watched the sun rise. It was incredible.”
On the Watson to Renfrow touchdown
“That moment epitomizes what our program is all about. You’ve got the 5-star QB throwing game-winning TD to walk-on wide out.”
On game-winning pass
“It’s a rub play, but it should have been defensive pass interference.”
On national perception of the ACC
“I think all of you media folks need to change your stories. This league has never gotten the respect it deserves. “Look at head to head records against SEC. It’s just incredible. You don’t want to play at team from this conference. Just name one.”
On program’s status as national contender
“It won’t be 35 years before we do this again … this program was built to last.”
On moving into new facility
“I haven’t packed a thing. It’ll be great to move the national champs in there.”
On Clemson having smaller budget than Alabama
“If we’d walked out last night and brought our checkbooks we’d have gotten our butts kicked.”
