Colorado State will battle fellow Mountain West conference member Nevada in Tucson on Dec. 29 in the inaugral NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl.

The Rams (7-5, 5-3 MW) are making their third straight bowl appearance and 15th in school history. Colorado State finished strong down the stretch in its first season under Mike Bobo, winning five of its last six games, including a 34-31 victory over Fresno State last time out. The Bulldogs grabbed a late 31-27 lead, but the Rams took it back on a 24-yard pass from Nick Stevens to Joe Hansley that was the go-ahead score. It was a game that was not dominated by the offense or defense, but the Colorado State special teams. Joe Hansley ran back two punt returns of 75 yards and 61 yards, while Kevin Nutt Jr. returned a kickoff 96 yards to the house. The special team scores accounted for the Rams’ first 21 points and helped jumpstart an offense that got off to a slow start. Colorado State is 1-1 in its last two bowl games beating Washington State, 48-45, in the 2013 New Mexico Bowl and losing 45-10 to Utah in last year’s Las Vegas Bowl.

The Wolf Pack (6-6, 4-4 MW) are also appearing in their third straight bowl game and ninth in the last 10 years. Nevada finished the regular season on a two-game skid, including a 31-14 loss to San Diego State in its last game. The Wolf Pack and Aztecs were knotted up at 14 each late in the second quarter, but San Diego State rattled off 17 unanswered points to close out the game. It was a tough day offensively for Nevada, as the Wolf Pack’s only score was a four-yard run by Hunter Fralick. Tyler Stewart was held in check as he passed for 228 yards with two picks and ran for negative yardage. The Wolf Pack front seven had no answer for the Aztec running game that featured two 100-yard rushers in Donnel Pumphrey (23 car, 154 yards, 2 TD) and Chase Price (19 car, 112 yards, TD). Nevada has lost three straight bowl games coming into this one, with its last win a 20-13 victory over Boston College in the 2011 Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.

The 2015 NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl will feature the 14th meeting between Colorado State and Nevada. The Rams hold an 11-2 edge in the series and have won the last two matchups.

    Prediction

Can Colorado State stop the run? That’s all that matters in this game – if Nevada runs well, it wins. If it sputters and struggles to keep the chains moving, it loses. The Rams were able to win late in the year despite being run over – New Mexico came up with 268 yards and three scores in the loss – and allowed 24 rushing touchdowns in the last nine games. Colorado State will run well, too, and will come up with a better all-around game to come up with a solid win in what should be a strong, competitive game.
