College Football Playoff Rankings: What happens if Florida beats Alabama?
December 2, 2015No way. It can’t happen. There’s absolutely no chance that a Florida team that struggled so much over the last few weeks of the season – needing overtime to get by Florida Atlantic and scoring just two points against Florida State – can topple Alabama and its loaded defense. But what if it does. What if the Buster Douglas actually knocks out Mike Tyson?
If North Carolina beats Clemson, the case could be made that it’ll get in after beating the No. 1 team in the country. But the Tar Heels don’t have any other wins of note.
As bad as Florida has looked at the end of the regular season, would the committee go overboard with its respect for a win over the No. 2 team? After all, Alabama has wins over Wisconsin, Georgia, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Tennessee, LSU, Mississippi State and Auburn, and as overrated as all those teams might be, and as down as the SEC might have been, that’s a lot of really, really good wins.
It might depend on how Florida beats the Crimson Tide. If it’s a brutally ugly turnover-fest, that might not be enough to get it done – it might be seen as a fluke. But if the Gators pitch a defensive gem, and the running game rolls on the way to a solid, tough win, that could sway the committee after it looks at the resume.
Now that Tennessee is No. 25, that counts as a solid top 25 win. Throw in the dominant 38-10 victory over the Ole Miss team that beat Alabama, along with a win over Georgia, and that might be just enough. The losses to LSU on the road and to Florida State aren’t all that galling, and, of course, the win over No. 2 Alabama would trump everything else.
The problem is Treon Harris. The big early wins came with Will Grier under center, and the offense hasn’t been the same with Harris taking over. But to keep harping on this – beating Alabama would be the headline-stealer of the weekend.
Being the SEC champion still matters. It might be tough to get the call, but a win would get the Gators close.
