March 14, 2017A college football news roundup that includes Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh making a bad impression with a recruit and Tennessee quarterback spending spring break with a guru.
In college football news, Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema told us that Rawleigh Williams III could rush for 2,000 yards but it is difficult in his system, Florida head coach Jim McElwain has been impressed with quarterback Kyle Trask’s approach so far this spring, and UGA backup quarterback Brice Ramsey has decided to transfer. Here are some other newsworthy notes in the latest college football news roundup.
Oh, Jim – Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh is sort of a loose cannon, and sometimes that can turn into a bad thing.
While at a football camp, Florida quarterback signee Jake Allen was talking to other players at the camp about their grades.
“I was messing around and said, ‘I got a C in third grade.’ Jim Harbaugh overheard and screams, ‘I don’t give a s–t about your grades,’” Allen said. “Then he realized I was part of the quarterback group that had recruits in it so he just kind of walked away. It was weird. I couldn’t wait to get out of there after that, and we left early.”
Oomph. That had to make the 6’3 Harbaugh feel just a bit smaller.
Guru at Work – The battle to take over as the starting quarterback in place of Joshua Dobbs is ongoing as the Volunteers hold their spring practice, but Jarrett Guarantano is not wasting any time during his spring break.
The redshirt freshman is spending his time during the week off with George Whitfield, a quarterback guru, in San Diego.
“He doesn’t talk about having that spot. He just says he knows he has to go to work,” Whitfield said. “For a kid that has grown up with a lot of self-confidence, he has been very humble about what is coming around the corner. It’s good to hear he is taking that ground-level approach to this shuffle.”
Coming To Your Computer Screen – The Mountain West is thinking of passing up TV money to broadcast games on the internet.
“We spent about seven hours with the presidents and ADs talking about our TV package,” Thompson said. “We’re playing at 8:15 or 8:30 consistently in football, we’ve even had some 9 o’clock tips in basketball, we had three Sunday afternoon (basketball) games in San Diego this year. What are we doing? What’s the return? They hear it from fans. They go to the games themselves. Presidents are saying, ‘Wait a minute. I have a 6 a.m. breakfast in the morning, and we have an 8:30 p.m. kick?’ The question becomes: Is it worth $1 million per school to have all these disenfranchised fans?”
I hear there is a company that can host games like that. Of course, the MW is quite familiar with us.
