September 26, 2016A college football news roundup that includes a couple of coaches getting the axe and the person who allegedly set Toomer’s Corner on fire being arrested.
It was a pretty quiet Sunday afternoon in the college football world and … what? Les Miles got fired by LSU? That’s huge news! Oh, and Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly fired defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder? Maybe it wasn’t the pleasant fall Sunday everyone expected it to be. Here are some other newsworthy notes in our latest college football news roundup.
Leave The Poor Trees Alone – After setting one of the famous Toomer’s Corner oak trees on fire early Sunday, a 29-year-old man, having been seen on security cameras was arrested. He had been arrested earlier in the day for public intoxication. No word on if his last name is Updyke.
Another Coach Firing – Okay, this one isn’t quite as large as Miles being dismissed by LSU, but Ron Turner was let go by Florida International on Sunday after starting the season 0-4, including a 53-14 loss to Central Florida on Saturday. Turner had led the Panthers to a mere 10-30 record in three-plus seasons.
Gone Too Young – Former Michigan State defensive back Mylan Hicks was killed in Calgary, Alberta, where he was a player on the Stampeders, in an “act of violence.” The 23-year-old Hicks was allegedly shot outside of a nightclub.
“Obviously this is an extremely difficult and upsetting time for the players and staff,” Stampeders president and general manager John Hufnagel said in a statement. ”It’s a terrible tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mylan’s family.”
