College basketball winners and losers from Week 15 of the 2016 season. Here’s a look at two teams that really helped their NCAA Tournament chances, and three more that stumbled.
February 22, 2016Every game is huge during the month of February, and the college basketball world keeps a close eye on who’s winning and who’s losing each time the ball is tipped. Every win or loss, however, is not built the same.
Some teams are still looking to build their resumes for the tournament. Others are working on seedings, and their stock can go up or down depending on the outcome every time the team hits the floor.
This weekend’s action was filled with upsets and meaningful performances that will reverberate well into March. Here’s a look at two teams that really helped their NCAA Tournament chances, and three more that stumbled.
The Hoosiers own the worst strength of schedule of any team leading a major conference right now, but beating No. 17 Purdue was huge for IU. Not only did it put Indiana in charge of the Big Ten race, it also gave Tom Crean his second win over a KenPom top 20 team in the past two weeks. With games against Iowa and Maryland in the near future, the Hoosiers are hitting their stride on both ends of the court at just the right time.
The Aggies have been an unholy mess for the past couple of weeks, losing to the likes of Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Alabama and LSU. However, win earlier this week vs. Ole Miss and a stunning 79-77 overtime win over Kentucky will do wonders for changing the perception of this team. UK gave A&M its last opportunity to score a quality win before the SEC Tournament, and the Aggies did what they needed to do. The free-fall looks like it might be over.
The Flyers may be ranked, but losing at home to St. Bonaventure is a huge hit that not only knocked Dayton out of first place in the A-10, but also shook the Flyers’ seeding. You would think Dayton is still in good shape as far as reaching the NCAA Tournament for now, and the Bonnies aren’t exactly a disastrous loss. That said, Dayton is going to have to regroup quickly, and suddenly the season finale vs. VCU is a must-win.
The Tigers have been hanging on to the NCAA Tournament picture with a solid win here and there, but two straight losses have been killers. The 16-point loss at Tennessee, which played without leading scorer Kevin Punter Jr., is devastating for an LSU squad that has been a huge disappointment. Sure, everyone would like to see Ben Simmons in the NCAA Tourney, but there simply aren’t any more excuses for LSU to stay in the picture.
Syracuse’s NCAA Tourney resume is fascinating this year because of the fact the team has been completely different under Jim Boeheim vs. what it was like when he was serving his suspension. The “Boeheim Resume” has been a hot topic of conversation, but two straight losses, including a 66-52 home loss to Pitt Saturday, is a blemish that might eliminate the Orange. A second straight blowout loss is ugly, and ‘Cuse only has one more shot to improve its resume (Feb. 29 at North Carolina) before the conference tournament.
