College Basketball Picks: Saturday’s Must-See Games

College basketball picks for Saturday's must-see games, including UNC vs. Notre Dame, Baylor vs. West Virginia and Oklahoma vs. Kansas State.

    February 6, 2016

College basketball picks for five must-see games on Saturday, Feb. 6.

The calendar has turned to February, and that means there is less time for a team to bounce back from a tough loss. Part of the proving ground of the stretch run is showing you can compete and even beat teams that are supposed to be among the best in the land.
This coming weekend is filled with some must-see tests. Here are the games you have to go out of your way to watch.

No. 3 Villanova at No. 11 Providence

The Friars are coming off a staggering loss to DePaul last Tuesday, and the Blue Demons dominated Providence on the boards. The Friars can’t allow Villanova to gain the same advantage on the glass, and Providence also has to deal with the electric scoring of ‘Nova guard Josh Hart. Providence is looking for a statement win, something that will right the ship, and the Friars can complete a sweep of Villanova this season after stunning the Wildcats in overtime back on Jan. 24.

    Pick: Providence

No. 18 Purdue at No. 4 Maryland

The Boilermakers have looked out and out vulnerable of late, squeaking to a win at Minnesota and losing to Iowa. Purdue’s inconsistency has been maddening, but the Boilers have the size to deal with Maryland’s bigs. The question is whether PU has an answer for the Terps’ Melo Trimble, who is must-see-TV in and of himself. If Purdue is going to have a shot at the Big Ten title, it will start with a win on the road vs. a hungry Maryland team.

    Pick: Maryland

No. 1 Oklahoma at Kansas State

Anytime the No. 1 team in the country is on, you have to watch. The beauty of the Sooners is their balance. Everyone knows about Buddy Hield and his 25.8 points a game. He’s poetry in motion, and there isn’t much he can’t do on the floor. But Ryan Spangler is a double-double waiting to happen, and Jordan Woodard isn’t exactly a nobody. K-State came within 10 last time these two teams played and have been itching to get them at home.

    Pick: Oklahoma

No. 2 North Carolina at Notre Dame

The Tar Heels weren’t close to their best at Louisville earlier in the week, and they know they’re going to have to bring a lot more energy to both ends of the floor if they’re going to beat ND on the road. Brice Johnson and Marcus Paige are a headache for any team, but the Fighting Irish have the guards to give UNC a challenge, especially in South Bend. Notre Dame has played to the level of its competition this year, but coach Mike Brey is going to need both Demetrius Jackson and Zach Auguste to stay out of foul trouble to run past the Tar Heels.

    Pick: North Carolina

No. 15 Baylor at No. 14 West Virginia

Both of these teams are hungry for win and need one to stay in the thick of the Big 12 race. The Mountaineers are just 3-3 in their last six, but the confidence-boosting win at Iowa State last Tuesday was huge. Dealing with Baylor’s length will be an issue for WVU, and the Mountaineers can’t allow Taurean Prince and Rico Gathers to get to the line or dominate the glass. Look for this one to be a battle with West Virginia working hard to slow Baylor down a bit.

    Pick: Baylor
