The No. 1 Clemson Tigers will travel north to Syracuse, NY Saturday to take on the Orange in an ACC Atlantic Division showdown.

The Tigers (9-0, 5-0) furthered their case as the best team in the nation, passing their biggest conference test of the season by defeating Florida State, 23-13, last week. The Seminoles knotted the game at 13 in the third quarter, but a Greg Huegel field goal and Wayne Gallman’s 25-yard touchdown run in the fourth sealed the victory for Clemson. Deshaun Watson put together another big performance for the Tigers, completing 28-of-42 attempts for 297 yards and a touchdown. Watson also carried the ball 16 times for 107 yards (his best rushing performance for as a Tiger), for a total yardage count of 404. The win over Florida State was the 12th straight for Clemson, allowed the Tigers to clinch ACC Atlantic Division and earned them a spot in the ACC title game.

After starting the season 3-0, the Orange (3-6, 1-4 ACC) have dropped their last six games, including last week’s 41-17 loss to Louisville. Syracuse allowed Louisville to record a season-high 579 yards of total offense, while Kyle Bolin stepped in for the injured Lamar Jackson and threw it around the yard for a season-high 362 yards and three touchdowns. Eric Dungey couldn’t match Bolin’s production and instead threw two interceptions, one of which was returned 39 yards for a touchdown by Trumaine Washington. The interception return gave the Cardinals a 14-10 lead in the second quarter and they never looked back, outscoring the Orange 34-7 the rest of the way.

Clemson and Syracuse will meet for the fourth time on Saturday since the two teams first met in the 1995 Gator Bowl. The Tigers have the all-time edge, 2-1, and have won the last two matchups.

The week after Florida State will always be dangerous for Clemson, especially after it clinched the division. However, Dabo Swinney has his Tigers focused on the bigger picture, a crack at a national championship. Plus, Clemson is so superior to Syracuse at all units that any challenge from the Orange shouldn’t last beyond halftime.

    Game Notes

    • A victory for Clemson at Syracuse will give the Tigers a 10-0 record and assure Clemson of a fifth straight season with at least 10 victories. Clemson would become just the 15th different school in college football history (current FBS schools) to have five consecutive seasons of at least 10 wins.
    • On Sept. 29, 1984, Syracuse upset No. 1 Nebraska, 17-9, at the Carrier Dome for its only win against the nation’s top team. The victory ended Nebraska’s 23-game, regular-season winning streak.
    • Clemson averages 488 yards of total offense per game this year, 20th in the nation and second in the ACC. The Tigers have reached these numbers against a schedule that includes four of the top 25 defense in the nation.
