Clemson vs. South Carolina Game Preview

Clemson kept itself in the College Football Playoff picture with a 35-13 win over Wake Forest this past Saturday. Running back Wayne Gallman ran for 161 yards and two touchdowns while quarterback Deshaun Watson accounted for three touchdowns.

South Carolina became bowl eligible with a 44-31 win over Western Carolina. The Gamecocks have won four out of their last five since true freshman quarterback Jake Bentley took over under center.

What To Know About Clemson

Watson has had another solid season, throwing for 3,279 yards and 28 touchdowns but has also been picked off 13 times so far. The resurgence of Gallman, who has rushed for 13 touchdowns this season, is a bright spot for Clemson.

The defense will try and rattle Bentley, who, if you haven’t heard, skipped his senior season of high school and is instead starting for the Gamecocks.

What to Know About South Carolina

Bentley has been solid considering how young he is, but the Gamecocks must be able to run the ball and take some pressure off of him. Rico Dowdle had a monster game against Western Carolina, rushing for 226 yards and two touchdowns.

For the defense, the Gamecocks must find a way to keep contain on Watson in the pocket and not let him keep drives alive by scrambling. Keeping it close and putting pressure on the Tigers will be crucial if the Gamecocks want a chance at the upset.

Advantages

Offense: Clemson. Watson will be moving onto the NFL after this season. Clemson fans better enjoy him while they still can.

Defense: Clemson. The Tigers give up just 17.9 points per game.

Special Teams: Clemson. Kicker Greg Huegel is 13-for-16 on field goal attempts.

Coaching: Clemson. Dabo Swinney might be at Clemson for a long time.

Intangibles: Clemson. Keep winning and a spot in the playoffs will almost certainly be theirs.

For Clemson, it just needs to do what has been working over the past two years: play solid defense and let Watson do his thing. South Carolina will come out with a fight, but the Tigers are too talented for the Gamecocks to stay in the game. Watson will earn another invite to New York City for the Heisman Trophy ceremony as the Tigers improve to 11-1 on the season.
