    Why You Need To Care

Head coach Frank Martin has the Gamecocks (9-0) off to their best start since he took over the program in 2012.

South Carolina has been winning by an average of 16.4 points and dropping an average of 83.2 points while holding its opponents to 66.8 points per game. But the Gamecocks have not gone on the road yet this season — aside from three neutral-site games — and going up against an in-state rival is always intense.

The Tigers are 7-3 entering this matchup. After starting out with three straight wins, Clemson dropped two of its next three to UMass and Minnesota.

After losing at home to Alabama, 51-50, on Sunday, the Tigers recovered with a win against Presbyterian, 69-41. But let’s see how they do against an undefeated rival.

    Why Clemson Will Win

On offense, the Tigers share the ball really well, averaging 15.3 assists per game with a chunk of that coming from Jordan Roper and Avry Holmes. They’ll need to make things happen off the dribble and create shots for guys like Donte Grantham and Jaron Blossomgame, but at the same time, all four need to be able to knock down triples to gain an edge. Blossomgame, specifically, will need to pull down some rebounds and ignite some breaks for the Tigers. Both teams are fairly even when it comes to rebounding and turnovers, so Clemson needs to fight to win those categories.

    Why South Carolina Will Win

It was just said, but if South Carolina is going to steal one from Clemson, it has to poke the ball free on defense and secure the glass on both ends. The Gamecocks have five guys averaging double figures, but let’s see how Mindaugas Kacinas does in this one. He’s leading the team with 13.3 points on 63 percent shooting, but he and Laimonas Chatkevicius will have to get into a groove early in the paint to establish the post threat. That will allow Sindarius Thornwell more space to work from the outside-in and attack.

    Game Notes

    • Carolina’s 51 rebounds vs. Western Carolina marked the most during the Frank Martin era, and the most since collecting 53 in an overtime contest vs. Western Kentucky on Nov. 27, 2010.
    • Clemson ranks fifth in the nation in opponent scoring average, as Tiger opponents average just 56.9 points per game. Clemson is also among national leaders in blocks per game at No. 17, paced by Landry Nnoko’s 24 (2.4 per game), which ranks 26th nationally.
    • The Gamecocks improved their record to 9-0 for the first time since the 1970-71 campaign on Dec. 15 with a 79-54 victory over Drexel at Colonial Life Arena. Three players scored in double-figures for Carolina, led by rookie guard PJ Dozier’s season high 16 points. Dozier hit 10-of-16 from the free throw line, while also dishing three assists in the win.
